Carl Furillio hits first Pinch Hit Homerun in First Inning, May 24, 1947 Philadelphia vs Brooklyn

About This Game
May 24 1947, at Ebbets Field Carl Furillo pinch hits for Gene Hermanski in the first inning and hits a three-run homer. The unusual substitution happened because Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman used right-handed starter Al Jurisch to pitch to the first two batters. He then immediately brought in a left-handed pitcher, Oscar Judd, to face Brooklyn's left-handed hitters, prompting Dodgers manager Burt Shotton to counter by substituting Furillo for Hermanski. Because this happened in the bottom of the first inning, Furillo’s pinch home run holds a unique record of the only first inning pinch hit homerun to date in MLB history. Skeeter Newsome’s third career homer in 5 years ties the game in the 8th and the Phils do win it in 10 innings‚ 4 – 3.
